We investigated antepartum and intrapartum risk factors for neonatal encephalopathy (NE) in term infants. We performed a case-controlled study in which characteristics of singleton term infants who developed NE from 1993 to 2003 were compared with those of randomly selected controls. Antenatal risk factors (including obesity, diabetes, thyroid 2017-08-05 2017-08-05 2019-10-14 All of the possible risk factors that might have contributed to asphyxia were identified and recorded HIE was diagnosed based on the Modified Sarnat-Sarnat Score for the diagnosis of neonatal encephalopathy. The clinical data of the HIE group were compared with those of the HIE negative group. DOI: 10.1055/s-0038-1639356 Corpus ID: 4422171.

Methods: Objective Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) may be associated with intrapartum sentinel events or may be unexplained. We sought to identify risk factors for unexplained HIE cases and compare their morbidity and mortality to cases associated with sentinel events. Neonatal HSV-2 maternal risk factors: Black race, young maternal age (<21), a discordant partner, primary or non-primary first episode infection in the third trimester, four or more lifetime sexual partners, lower level of education, history of previous STD, history of pregnancy wastage, first viable pregnancy, and gestation <38 weeks. Badawi et al investigated risk factors of neonatal encephalopathy in the Western Australian case control study.{ref20} Of the 164 infants with moderate-to-severe neonatal encephalopathy, preconc encephalopathy. Risk of neonatal encephalopathy increased with increasing or decreasing maternal age.

We aimed to identify avoidable risk factors for neonatal encephalopathy in a low income setting where large prospective studies of risk factors have not previously been reported, and we chose the main maternity hospital in Kathmandu. We focused on intrapartum factors and maternal deficiency states as the most likely practical intervention points.
